Finding a spot to catch some swells isn’t difficult here, with 17 miles of pristine, white sand beaches to choose from. However, those in the know congregate at a couple of hot spots where the waves are bigger and more exciting.

One such location is Smyrna Dunes Park, near the jetty south of the Ponce de Leon Inlet, where several sandbars amp up the surf. Access to the beach is from Tide Street. The other side of the inlet is also a great location. Here, several waterways—the Intracoastal Waterway, the Indian River, and the Halifax River—empty between stone jetties into the Atlantic, which makes for a powerful swell.

When the waves are coming from the south, Bethune Beach Park is a great place to catch them, and usually without the crowds. The park also offers restrooms, picnic pavilions, and a riverside park, so if not everyone in your group surfs, this is a great spot to choose.
