Stops Along the NSB Women’s Heritage Trail

Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park

This scenic and historically significant spot is named after the renowned educator and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune. A champion for African American education and equality, Bethune founded Bethune-Cookman University and played a key role in national civil rights efforts. The park, once the only beach accessible to African Americans during segregation, now welcomes all visitors to enjoy its oceanfront views, picnic pavilions and abundant wildlife, including dolphins and manatees.

Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum

Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve

Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve, named in honor of the renowned artist and environmentalist, spans over 2,400 acres of protected land. A visionary sculptor and conservationist, Leeper played a crucial role in preserving Florida’s natural landscapes, including advocating for the creation of Canaveral National Seashore.
