Cast Your Line in the New Smyrna Beach Area for the Ultimate Fishing Trip

The New Smyrna Beach Area is a fisherman’s paradise. Both fresh- and saltwater species abound, and numerous fishing shops and outfitters are available to meet the needs of all levels of anglers. Make sure to consult the state’s regulations before setting out, and, most importantly, have fun!

Best Spots to Cast a Line

Gone_Fishing2_SNBJEwU9sy7FQZAEYz0si5r18q0ABlZBhThe New Smyrna Beach Area, located on the 3,000-mile Intracoastal Waterway, boasts some of the best sport fishing around. For adventure out on the water, launch from the Ponce de Leon Inlet at the north end of the island. Eleven miles northeast of the inlet, the sunken 446-foot USS Mindanao forms an artificial reef that attracts triggerfish, snapper, and grouper, as well as the occasional lobster. Further out, the intercontinental shelf drops off about 40 miles from shore, and that’s where you’ll find the big ones: 100-plus-pound tuna and sailfish during their springtime migration.

The Indian River Lagoon also is a great spot for inshore anglers. Cast off from shallow water boats to hunt gator trout and snook. Late-season anglers have been known to reel in 100-pound tarpon from this waterway.

For surf fishing, check out the granite jetty, south of Ponce de Leon Inlet, where whiting, flounder, redfish, and Spanish mackerel abound. Each oceanfront rental property also provides access to shoreline fishing.

Casting the Perfect Experience: Charters, Licenses, and Gear Tips

Southwind_Charters_SrGu947Fz98f-YIsMqzsror18q0ABlZBhNo boat of your own? That’s not a problem in this area. Several charter companies will take you out to where the big fish live. Whether for a couple of hours, the whole day, or several days, you’re sure to come back with lifelong memories.

Of course, the first item you’ll want to purchase is a license. You can do this online or in person.  Several bait shops supply local and visiting anglers with live bait, artificial lures, and other fishing equipment. Dining Options

Several area restaurants will cook it for you, in just about any way you wish. Outriggers Tiki Bar and Grille, JB’s Fish Camp, and Goodrich Seafood Restaurant are just a few of the options for you to indulge in the delicious local flavors.

On the flip side, if you’ve come back to shore empty-handed, with only stories about the one that got away, your pride might be hurt, but at least you’ll still get a world-class seafood dinner when you’re in the New Smyrna Beach Area. Choose from the many restaurants that serve up fish and shellfish, from ultracasual shacks to fine dining.
